Q

middle ear includes:

A

Tympanic membrane
Ossicles - 3 small bones
1. malleus

3. stapes (staped/o - middle ear bone)
Oval window - separates middle ear from inner ear
Eustachian Tube - leads from middle ear to pharynx

26
Q

inner ear includes:

A

“labrinth”

  • Cochlea -
    1. Auditory liquids (perilymph, endolymph, vibrations travel thru liquids
    2. Organ of Corti - sensitive auditory receptor
  • Auditory Nerve Fiber - leads to brain for hearing
  • Function of Vestibule - connects cochlea to 3 semicircular canals for balance
  • Organ for Equilibrium - semicircular canals contain 2 membranous sacs - SACCULE and UTRICLE
27
Q

Types of Deafness

A
  1. Conduction deafness - impairment of middle ear ossicles and membranes that transmit sound waves into the cochlea (sound never got there)
  2. Nerve deafness - impairment of the cochlea or auditory nerve
  3. Noise induced deafness - headphones; loud noises
28
Q

otitis media

A

infection by staphylococcus or streptococcus

Meniere’s Disease

A

disorder of the inner ear marked y elevated endolymph pressure. Symptoms include tinnitus & vertigo & loss of hearing

32
Q

otosclerosis

A

bone growth around oval window & stapes leading to inner ear causing improper conduction of vibration. Correct w/stapedectomy
