Unit 2 Quiz study guide - Henery VIII Flashcards

1
Q

What church did he create? How’s it different from the catholic church? Why did he start it/break away from the Catholic Church?

A

The Church: Anglican Church (Church of England
How it’s different: Anglicans do not recognize the pope as the head of the Christian faith. Instead, the head of the Church of England is the British monarch.
Why:
-He was excommunicated from the church in 1538 after secretly marring Anne Boleyn (she was pregnant with their child)
-Because Pope Clement VII could not annul the marriage because for Pope Clement VII to annul the marriage, he would have to contradict his predecessor Pope Julius II’s dispensation. Which goes against the rule of the catholic church. So Henry decided to make his own church.
