Define norms
Specific rules or socially accepted standards that govern behavior in particular situations
Define values
General principles or guidelines for how we should live our lives
Define mores
Morals or good ways or behaving. Norms that a culture would think of as too serious to break
Define individualization
Belief that individuals should have the right to choose how they live their lives, so long as they do no harm to others
Define equal rights
All people should have equal treatment regardless of specific characteristics
Define secularization
The declining influence of religion on people’s lives, attitudes, and values
How has the public perception of drink driving changed?
Now seen as serious and reflected in laws e.g. 1967 Road Safety Act

British society became much more diverse when people immigrated from British Colonies (e.g. India, Pakistan, the West Indies)

Immigrants often suffered discrimination in housing, employment, and other services

What is the Equality Act 2010?
Brought together laws on all kinds of discrimination. Overseen by the Equality and Human Rights Commission
What cultural changes have taken place since the 1960s?
Decline in prejudice towards ethnic minorities perhaps due to the change in laws or due to people mixing at work and at school more
How has the perception of crime changed with reference to discrimination?
Discrimination and race hate now seen as crimes. People are more likely to accept that these should be criminal offenses
How have norms and laws changed regarding transgender rights?
No longer regarded as a medical condition – greater acceptance of choice, 2004 Gender Recognition Act - people can change gender with evidence from a gender recognition panel
