Obesity
A surplus of adipose tissue resulting from excessive energy intake relative to energy expenditure
> risk of diabetes, CHD, high BP
impairs ability to undertake exercise
Positive energy balance
Energy intake > energy expenditure
Negative energy balance
Energy intake < energy expenditure
Impacts of a poor diet
> Elevates cholesterol - (high BPP and CHD)
Low density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol)
Atherosclerosis - blood clots, restricted blood flow - CV disease
Diabetes
Calories contribute to obesity
Impacts of a lack of exercise
> High BP
CHD
Cardiac + muscle atrophy
Diabetes
Impacts of smoking
> Stiffened blood vessels (reduced elasticity increases BP)
Increased HR (strain)
Reduced blood flow
Increased risk of blood clots - heart attacks
Carbon monoxide reduces haemoglobin - less O2
Damaged respiratory walls
Impacts of alcohol
> High BP
Risk of clots and diabetes
Vital organ (liver) damage
Damage nervous system (speech, taste, smell)
Stomach ulcers, increased weight
Addiction
Impacts of stress and anxiety
> High BP + HR
Heart disease
Hypertension
Inhibits ability to exercise
Impacts of recreational drugs (caffeine, stimulants, cannabis, cocaine)
> Increased HR, BP, and body temperature
Damage to vital organs
Addiction
Reduced appetite
Insomnia, anxiety, fatality
Positives of PEDs
> Increased strength
Recovery
RBC count
Stimulated nervous system
Negatives of PEDs
> Nausea
Insomnia
Heart disease
Addictive
Risk of overdose/fatality
Moral and legal issues
