Pulmonary volumes Flashcards
Tidal volume
Volume of air inspired or expired per breath
Inspiratory reserve volume (IRV)
Volume of air that can be forcibly inspired above resting tidal volume
Expiratory reserve volume (ERV)
Volume of air that can be forcibly inspired above resting tidal volume
Residual volume (RV)
Volume of air remaining in the lungs after maximal expiration
Inspiratory capacity (IC)
Maximum volume of air that can be inspired after reaching the end of a normal inhalation
Inspiratory capacity equation
IC = Tidal volume + Inspiratory reserve volume
Functional residual capacity (FRC)
Volume of air remaining in the lungs after a normal exhalation
Vital capacity (VC)
Maximal volume of air that can be forcibly expired following maximal inspiration
Vital capacity equation
TV+IRV+ERV
Total lung capacity (TLC)
Total volume of air in the lungs following maximum inspiration
Tidal volume (during exercise)
