Acute and chronic injuries Flashcards
Sports injuries
Any kind of injury, pain, or physical damage that occurs as a result of sport, exercise or physical activity
> inevitable
dependant on intensity, preparation, rest/recovery, and competitive opponents
Common symptoms
> Immobility
Pain
Swelling
Tenderness
Weakness
Types of injury
Acute: happen suddenly in a given moment
Chronic (overuse): develop slowly over a period of time, with sustained symptoms
Acute injuries: symptoms
> Sudden severe pain
Loss of function, stability, mobility
Deformity, swelling, bruising
Require immediate first aid treatment
Acute: Fracture - definition
A crack or break to a bone (can be partial or complete)
Acute: Fracture - cause
Excessive eternal forces
Acute: Fracture - types
Simple - bone remains in the skin
Compound - penetrate the skin, creating an open wound
Acute: Fracture - sporting examples
strong tackles, landing awkwardly
Acute: Dislocation - definition
When the bones at a joint are separated and the joint can no longer function
Acute: Disclocation - cause
Caused by a violent action/excessive force
Acute: Dislocation - sporting examples
Awkward tackle in rugby
Lifting heavy weight
Acute: Soft tissue damage - definition
When muscles, ligaments, or tendons are damaged
Acute: Soft tissue damage - examples
> Sprains
Stains
Bruises
Concessions
Tears
Cuts
Ruptures
Abrasion
Acute: Sprains - definition
Stretching or tearing a ligament
(commonly ACL)
Acute: Sprains - cause
Over-extending a joint beyond its normal range of motion
Acute: Sprains - sporting examples
Tackles, awkward landings
Acute: Cruciate ligament injury - definition
When the cruciate ligament is stretched or torn (grades depending on severity)
Acute: Cruciate ligament injury - cause
Sudden movement of a joint
Acute: Cruciate ligament injury - sporting examples
> Turning quickly in rugby
Tackles
Most common in knee (ACL/PCL)
Acute: Achilles tendon injury - definition
When the achilles tendon is torn or ruptured (complete tear)
Acute: Achilles tendon injury - cause
Forceful and sudden stress on the tendon
Acute: Achilles tendon injury - sporting examples
> Sprint start, sudden muscle use
Wearing wrong footwear
Lack of warmup
Happens progressively with age
Acute: Concussion - definition
Traumatic head injury that affects brain function
Acute: Concussion - cause
forceful blow to the head
Acute: Concussion - sporting examples
Contact sports, rugby, boxing
Chronic injuries:
> Start with mild symptoms, athlete can ignore and continue
Gradual increase of pain and inflammation
Due to continued overuse
Chronic: Tendonitis (Tennis/golfer’s elbow) - definition
Inflammation or a tear of tendons
Chronic: Tendonitis (Tennis/golfer’s elbow) - cause
Overuse of tendon from repetitive movements
Chronic: Tendonitis (Tennis/golfer’s elbow) - sporty examples
Tennis, golf. badminton faulty technique
Chronic: Shin splints (periostitis) - definition
Pain and inflammation of the shin bone and periosteum (layer of connective tissue surrounding bone - supplies blood and cells for growth and repair)
Chronic: Shin splints (periostitis) - cause
Repeated stress on the tibia
Chronic: Shin splints (periostitis) - sporting examples
Overuse, repeated weight bearing, running
Chronic: Stress fracture - definition
Fracture of the bone caused by repeated stress
Chronic: Stress fracture - cause
Overuse from weight bearing activities
Chronic: Stress fracture - sporting examples
> Overload theory - repeated contractions lead to load being transferred to the skeleton
Runners
Strain - definition
Damage to muscle fibres or tendons such as a tear
Strain - cause
Impact trauma or overloading a muscle
Acute strain - cause
> Poor body mechanics
Heavy lifting
One event
Chronic strain - cause
> Stressing a muscle
Repeated movement
Strain - sporting examples
100m sprint, lifting too much weight
