Injury rehabilitation Flashcards
RICE
The traditional method applied to soft tissue injuries - usually acute.
> Rest
> Ice
> Compression
> Elevation
RICE: Rest
Prevent further damage and speed healing
RICE: Ice
Reduces blood flow, prevents swelling, relieves pain
RICE: Compression
Reduce swelling, support damaged tissue, immobilise injured area
RICE: Elevation
Drain fluid build up and swelling
(elevate above heart level)
POLICE protocol
> Protection
Optimal loading
Ice
Compression
Elevation
POLICE: Protection
Injured area rested, then protected to prevent further damage (splint)
POLICE: Optimal loading
Progressively loading the injury with weight/stress to increase circulation to promote healing
POLICE: Ice
Reduces blood flow to prevent swelling and relieve pain
POLICE: Compression
Reduce swelling and support damaged tissue
POLICE: Elevation
Drain fluid build up/prevent blood flow to reduce swelling (elevate above heart level)
RICE or POLICE?
POLICE may not be appropriate for torn muscles
Reliance on protection may lead to muscle wastage
