Principles of Stability Flashcards
Balance
> The ability to keep the bodys centre of mass over a base of support
Centre of mass
> The single point (which can be inside or outside of the body) at which the weight of the body acts for the body as a whole.
Toppling
> Caused by the weight acting vertically at the centre of mass therefore to one side to the near edge of the base of support (used by diverse, gymnasts, and sprinters).
Stability
> Dependant on the centre of mass being directly over the base of support (at equilibrium).
Increasing stability
> Increase size of base of support
Centralise the line of weight within the base of support
Lower centre of gravity/weight
Increase body mass
Extend base of support in direction of oncoming force
Shift line of weight toward oncoming force
