ATP-PC System Flashcards
Steps of the ATP-PC system
> 5 steps
For quick energy production
Step 1
ATP is broken down at the cross bridge to release energy for muscle contraction
Step 2
Leaving the by products Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP) and one single phosphate (Pi)
Step 3
Phosphocreatine (PC) is then broken down into creatine and one single phosphate (Pi) by creatine kinase
Step 4
The energy released in the breakdown of PC allows the resynthesis of ATP, assisted by ATPase
Step 5
New ATP can now be broken down again to release energy to fuel activity
When does the ATP-PC system work?
> During the first few seconds of exercise, regardless of intensity, it is used exclusively
After PC stores run out, other energy systems must be relied upon
Stores are replenished about 2 minutes after rest
ATP-PC system: sporting context
> Sprint events (100m)
Javelin, shot put, high/long jump
Gymnastics vault
Sprints followed by recovery - team sports
Training the ATP-PC system
> Maximal intensity work - 10 seconds
2 minutes rest
1s:12s work:rest ratio
ATP-PC system: +
> High intensity
PC readily available in muscles
No delay for O2
Simple/rapid breakdown of PC and resynthesis of ATP
Explosive initial movements
Replenishes quickly (2min)
No fatiguing by-products (lactic acid)
ATP-PC system: -
> Low energy yield (1ATP produced)
Exhausts quickly (10 seconds)
