When a person who is activity searching for work is unable to find a job.
Doesn’t include people voluntarily deciding not to work eg stay at hoke parent

May not have language fluency
Qualifications obtained abroad may not be recognised
Experience discrimination

Causes of unemployment
Location (MNCs flavour urban, less opportunity in rural and disadvantaged areas)
Foreign/global competition (companies relocate)
Low incentive (social welfare can be more rewarding)
Seasonal factors (tourism in summer, retail at christmas)
Automation (unemployment of unskilled workers)
Demand (less demand during recession)
Effects of unemployment on individuals
Financial insecurity (unable to pay bills/mortgage = debt = poverty)
Loss of identity and status (undervalued, low self-worth)
Social isolation (no work contact, not enough income for lesuire and social events)
Depression and destructive habits
Impact of unemployment on family units
Decline in standard of living and reliance on social welfare
Repossession of family home (homelessness = emergency accommodation = no normal routine)
Relationships problems (marital breakdown)
Decline in educational success (unequal access to resources. Teenagers may have to leave school to work)

Increase in taxes to pay social welfare
