Price (after balancing, might be more economical for one parent to stay home)
Environment (inside/outside home, hygienic and safe)
Age and needs of child (might benefit them to see other kids, special needs)
Convenience (to work/home and of working hours)
Experience and qualifications (capable)
Desirable characteristics of a childminder
Love of children
Provide engaging activities promote development and learning
Secure, safe, happy environment
Good health, free from physical and mental illness
Willing to maintain good communication w parents
Advantages of childminder
Child’s home = familiar = more time in mornings
One on one time, individual care and attention
Less susceptible to illness away from other kids
Flexible around parents schedule
Less expensive
Disadvantages of childminders
No back up if they’re sick
May not have training/qualifications
Rearing methods may differ eg discipline. (Tension with parents. Confusion with children)
Difficult to monitor especially if kids can’t talk
Desirable characteristic of a crèche
Indoor and outdoor spaces Sanitation, lighting, heating Accessible Safe and hygienic (separate areas) Trained workers Adult to child ratio Wide variety of resources eg age appropriate toys (eg no Lego for babies)
Advantages of crèches
Qualified staff Stimulating environment Health and safety regulations Reliable working hours Interaction w other kids eg sharing, listening
Disadvantages of crèches
Hard to settle into bustling environment Reduced one to one Increased susceptibility of illness Strict opening hours not flexible Expensive
