Umbilicus (new book) Flashcards
What does the umbilical remnant contain?
umbilical vein, the two umbilical arteries, and the urachus
Where does the umbilical vein run?
From the umbilicus to the liver.
What does the umbilical vein do?
carries blood from the placenta to the liver of the foetus.
When the umbilical vein atrophies what does it become?
The round ligament of the liver (part of the falciform ligament)
What is the normal size of the umbilical vein?
10mm
Where do the umbilical arteries run?
The umbilical arteries run caudally from the umbilicus toward the bladder. The urachus is located between the two arteries. When the umbilical arteries reach the bladder, they move away from each other, running close to the lateral aspect of the bladder to join the internal iliac
arteries.
What do the umbilical arteries do?
In the fetus, the arteries transport blood from the internal iliac arteries to the placenta.
When the umblilical arteries atrophy what to they become?
The round ligaments of the bladder.
What is the normal diameter of the two arteries and urachus near the umbilical stump?
24mm or less.
What are the most common structures to get infected in the umbilical stump?
Umbilical arteries and urachus
Where does the urachus run from and to, and what is its purpose?
In the fetus, the urachus transports urine from the fetal bladder to the allantoic cavity.
What does the urachus become after it atrophies?
The median ligament of the bladder.
With infection all structures of the umbilical remnant typically contain hypo to hyperechoic content in their lumen. But which structure does NOT typically become thickened?
The urachus.
Infection of the urachus can lead to leakage of urine into which structures?
Thought the umbilicus (even if it temporarily occluded), into the abdomen and into the subcutis.
What is indicated by the 2?
Umbilical vein. The arêtes are paired (1) and the urachus us mostly collapsed down and usually not easy to see in a normal foal.
