Non-pregnant mare (new book) Flashcards
Which sedative should be avoided prior to US examination of the uterus?
ACP as is reduced uterine tone making it less conspicuous
Which stages of the oestrus cycle are in the follicular phase and which in the luteal phase?
Proestrus and oestrus - follicular
Metestrus and diestrus - luteal
What is the appearance of the mares repro tract during the winter period of anestrus?
Uterus relaxed, cervix (on septum exam) toneless, follicles are small (under 10mm)
How does the repro tract or the mare appear during the transitional period?
Many different degrees of development. The ovaries may have no follicles or clusters of small follicles and the mare may be showing strong estrous behavior or no estrous behavior at all. The uterus usually has very little tone and no edema or fluid, and the cervix will be pale and relaxed.
How does the repro tract of the mare look as cycling begins and oestrus progresses?
As oestrus progresses, uterine oedema will increase and a small amount of fluid may normally be present in the mare’s uterus, follicular activity will become greater with the development of a dominant follicle.
How does the repro tract of the mare look in the approach to ovulation?
The approach of ovulation will be signaled by the reduction of uterine oedema, further relaxation of the cervix and vulva, and stronger behavioral signs of oestrus. The follicle will lose its spherical shape and begin to migrate toward the ovulation fossa.
What is shown in these images?
Preovulatory follicles that have lost their spherical shape.
