Liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder (new book) Flashcards
What structure is deep to the liver on the right side of the abdomen?
Right dorsal colon with the duodenum in between.
On the left side of the abdomen which structures are in contact with the liver?
Stomach and spleen
Where is the spleen imaged on both sides of the abdomen?
Right - ventral aspect of 9th ICS
Left 7th ICS to paralumbar fossa.
What is the location and shape of the kidneys?
Right - ventral to the transverse processes 14-16th ICS, heart shaped.
Left - 15th ICS to caudal border of the paralumbar fossa, oval to pyramidal.
Left is considered larger.
What is the echogenicity of the renal cortex compared to surrounding tissues?
Hypoechoic to surrounding tissues but more echoic than the medulla
What is the normal thickness of the renal cortex?
not greater than 1cm
Which typically have thicker walls the portal veins or hepatic veins?
portal veins
What is shown in this image?
The liver has rounded edges suggesting hepatomegaly and likely hepatitis.
What is shown in this image?
Patchy increased echogenicity of the lover suggestive of acute hepatitis.
What do you suspect based on these large hyperechoic structures within the liver?
Amyloidosis or cholelithiasis .
What is shown in this image?
Splenic tear
What is the normal renal size in an horse?
16 x 10cm
What is the typical sonographic appearance of a horse with nephritis?
Typically, horses with nephritis have a sonogram appearance of homogenous echogenecity of the entire kidney with subsequent loss of distinction between the cortex and the medulla.
What is shown in this image?
Hydronephrosis - this was secondary to a proximal ureteral stone.
Is this bladder normal
Yes, normal bladder sediment.
