The pregnant mare - three chapters (new book) Flashcards
Palpable detection of pregnancy is possible from which day post ovulation?
28
How long does the spherical embryo remain mobile within the mares uterus?
up to day 17
From what day is pregnancy detectable (embryonic vesicle) on transrectal US?
9 to 10 days
where does the embryonic vesicle fix at day 17?
at the base of a uterine horn
At what stage is the allantoic cavity first visible on transrectal US?
21 days
At which stage is there a detectable heartbeat in the developing foetus?
21-28 days
When are endometrial cups formed and are the visible?
Day 35 - 120
The endometrial cups themselves are not normally discernible within the endome- trium on routine ultrasonography. Mineralized structures in non-pregnant mares with retained endometrial cups may be visible at the base of a previously pregnant horn in rare instances of endometrial cup retention.
How can you differentiate a endometrial cyst from an early pregnancy?
Its not alway possible but cysts are usually off centre to the uterine lumen, they do not move at the embryo does for the first 17 days and they do not grow rapidly in size as the embryo does.
When should you examine a pregnant mare for twins
15-16 days. so the embryos are still mobile and can be separated to permit safe pinching of a single embryo
At what size is it possible to express an embryonic vesicle/ pinch a twin?
> 15mm
What do the endometrial cups secrete? and what does this do?
pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin PMSG which causes the formation of secondary corpra lutea to maintain pregnancy.
Beyond which day post ovulation is foetal sexing best performed transabdominally?
beyond 150 days
How is early foetal sexing achieved 55-90 days?
Determining the location of the genital tubercle (= sign) and base on the plane of US examination and proximity to the tail base this can be determined.
When is the optimum time to perform foetal sexing?
days 60-70.
When can trans abdominal evaluation of the foetus be attempted
from day 100.
