Q

What is shown in this image of the duodenum?

A

Duodenitis. This image demonstrates thick- walled duodenum. Salmonella spp. was isolated from the gastric fluid suggesting it may have been an etiology for the duodenitis. Normal duodenal wall thickness in an adult horse is ≤ 3 mm.

Q

The observation of markedly distended, poorly motile segments of small intestine with ventral sedimentation of particulate material is most often suggestive of?

A

strangulating lesion of the small intestine, however, can also be observed with non-strangulating, obstructive lesions such as ileal impactions and non-strangulating entrapment of the small intestine.

Q

Lawsonia intracellularis infection in weanling to yearling aged animals typically causes what US appearance?

A

thick-walled, edematous small intestine consistent with prolif- erative enteritis (Figures 23.28 and 23.29). Edematous thickening of the large intestine may also be present as a result of marked hypoalbuminemia

Q

What goes in what with a caecocolic intussusception and how does it appear?

A

trilayer appearance of thickened, edematous, intussuscepted cecal wall is seen within the lumen of the right ventral colon. The trilayer is composed of the outer most mucosa with the central echogenic layer of muscularis and innermost layer of serosa. The intussusception can be demonstrated more easily when it is surrounded by liquid luminal content within the right ventral colon.
