:Performance appraisals
:Self-evaluation
:Employee observation
What is management by objectives(MBO)(n.)
Management by objectives(n.)= involves both managers and employees collaboratively setting individual employee goals that contribute to the achievement of broader business objectives. p. 130
Characteristic=
By using this strategy, employees are involved in their own goal-setting process, they are therefore more likely to develop a stronger commitment and ownership over their individualised objectives that lead to the achievement of business objectives. Therefore, management by objectives can lead to improvements in employee performance.2
What is performance appraisals(n.)
Performance appraisals(n.)= involve a manager assessing the performance of an employee against a range of criteria, providing feedback, and establishing plans for future improvements.1
Characteristic=
Managers can use performance appraisals to identify any problems in employee performance and make decisions about which members of staff require further training, opportunities for promotion, or dismissal based on their work ethic.2
What is self-evaluation(n.)
Self-evaluation(n.)= involves an employee assessing their individual performance against a set of criteria.1
Characteristic=
Self-evaluation enables a manager to gain insight into an employee’s perception of their own ability and can be used to address strengths and weaknesses in their performance.2
What Is employee observation(n.)
employee observation(n.)= involves a range of employees from different levels of authority assessing another employee’s performance against a set of criteria.3
Characteristics=
This performance management strategy can improve employee performance as staff are likely to be responsive to suggestions from their peers and should work harder to resolve any issues in their performance that are identified by their coworkers.4 ]
Management by objectives(MBO) Advantages
+Aligns personal objectives(can use motivation strategies for this) with business objectives, builds in employees’ self-interest and motivation.
+Makes it very clear what is expected.
+Involves collaboration between employees and employers and should improve workplace relationships.
Management by objectives(MBO) Disadvantages
-Designing and reviewing objectives can take time.
-If linked to remuneration,(i.e., performance-related pay) can increase expenses
-Can be demoralising if they don’t achieve objectives.
Performance appraisal Advantages
+Involves communication with employees and should improve workplace relationships
+can help identify areas requiring further training(improving weak areas of employees)
+Can provide information to determine employee’s readiness for promotion or dismissal.
Performance appraisal Disadvantages
-Can be a very time-consuming process
-Sometimes instils fear in employees over possible dismissal, or failure to achieve desired promotion, etc.
-Can provide repeated information and results that could cause the termination of employees= giving this strategy a fear factor
Self-evaluation Advantages
+Generally, very quick and easy to administer, and doesn’t use much of the manager’s time
+The employer can get an insight into the employees’’ mindset
Self-evaluation Disadvantages
-Open to personal biases=whether excessive, overly humble, or even dishonest, which can reduce its accuracy.
employee observation Advantages
+As the assessment is conducted whilst employees are working, it is likely to be authentic
+Gains information from a number of sources, peers, customers, managers, etc.
+Can identify areas requiring further training.
+Can provide information to determine employees’ readiness for promotion or dismissal.
employee Observation Disadvantages
-can be very time-consuming process(sing up for freelance agency, manager taking hours to watch you individually, 30 min chat between employee and employer, etc.)
-Can catch the employee on a “bad day” which may not be reflective of their general ability.
-Can be stressful for the employee if they are aware of the assessment.
-If they are aware they are being observed, can lead to altered work habits to impress the observer.
