Types of Tissues Flashcards
What are the four main types of tissues in the human body?
Epithelial tissue
Connective tissue
Muscle tissue
Nervous tissue
What are the three embryonic germ layers?
Ectoderm (outer) – forms nervous tissue and skin
Mesoderm (middle) – forms muscle and connective tissue
Endoderm (inner) – forms internal linings
What is epithelial tissue and its functions?
Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands.
Functions: Protection, secretion, and absorption.
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
- Skeletal muscle – Voluntary, moves bones.
- Smooth muscle – Involuntary, found in organs and vessels.
- Cardiac muscle – Involuntary, found in the heart.
What is connective tissue and its function?
Connective tissue binds organs, provides support, and integrates body parts.
Examples: Bone, blood, cartilage, adipose (fat).
What is nervous tissue and its function?
Nervous tissue transmits electrical signals between body regions.
Examples: Brain, spinal cord, nerves.
What are the two types of tissue membranes?
- Connective tissue membranes – e.g., synovial membranes in joints.
- Epithelial membranes – include mucous, serous, and cutaneous membranes
What is the function of synovial membranes?
They line movable joints (e.g., knee, shoulder) and secrete synovial fluid to reduce friction.
What are the types of epithelial membranes?
- Mucous membranes: Line cavities open to the external environment (e.g., digestive tract).
- Serous membranes: Line closed cavities (e.g., pericardium, pleura).
- Cutaneous membrane: The skin, provides protection.
What is the function of serous membranes?
They reduce friction between organs by secreting serous fluid.
What are the four tissue types found in the stomach?
- Epithelial tissue – lines the stomach.
- Connective tissue – provides support.
- Muscle tissue – moves food.
- Nervous tissue – controls muscle contractions.
