Skin Glands Flashcards
What are the four main accessory structures of the skin?
Skin glands, hair, nails, sensory receptors
What is the function of skin glands?
Lubricate the skin and help regulate body temperature
What are the three types of skin glands?
Sebaceous glands, sweat glands, ceruminous glands
What is the main function of sebaceous glands?
Secrete sebum to soften and waterproof skin and hair
Where are sebaceous glands NOT found?
Palms of hands & soles of feet
What is the function of sweat glands?
Secrete sweat to help cool the body and remove waste
What are the two types of sweat glands?
Eccrine & Apocrine
What is the function of eccrine sweat glands?
Produce sweat for thermoregulation (cooling the body)
Where are eccrine sweat glands most abundant?
Palms, soles, forehead
What is the function of apocrine sweat glands?
Produce thicker sweat linked to body odor & pheromones
Where are apocrine sweat glands found?
Armpits, genital area, densely hairy regions
What is the function of ceruminous glands?
Produce earwax (cerumen) to protect and clean the ear
What forms earwax (cerumen)?
Secretions from ceruminous & sebaceous glands
What do sebaceous glands secrete?
Sebum (oily secretion that waterproofs & protects skin)
How do antiperspirants reduce sweating?
Form a physical plug in sweat gland ducts
What is another word for eccrine gland
Merocrine Gland
Hypotonic sweat is secreted by what gland?
Merocrine (eccrine) gland.
How does merocrine gland release sweat?
Directly onto the skin
Larger than eccrine glands, located deeper in the dermis/hypodermis.
Aprocrine Sweat Glands
These sweat glands are activated by nervous & hormonal control
Aprocrine Sweat Glands
Essential for hydration and antibacterial defense
Sebum
