Homeostatic Imbalance Flashcards
What is homeostatic imbalance?
A disruption of the body’s internal equilibrium, which can lead to disease if prolonged.
What are the three main causes of homeostatic imbalance?
Internal (genetics, aging), External (nutrition, lifestyle), Environmental (temperature, toxins).
How does aging contribute to homeostatic imbalance?
Weaker organs, less efficient negative feedback loops, increased risk of disease.
How does homeostatic imbalance affect the cardiovascular system?
Weaker heart muscle, stiff arteries, fat buildup → Atherosclerosis & heart attacks.
What is the role of vitamin D in homeostasis?
Works with calcium for bone remodeling; deficiency can lead to osteoporosis & other diseases.
What happens when the body is exposed to extreme heat?
Hyperthermia → Body overheats, can cause heat stroke & organ failure.
What happens when the body is exposed to extreme cold?
Hypothermia → Body loses heat, organs slow down, can be fatal.
