Ilium Flashcards
The upper curved ridge of the ilium; important for muscle attachment and forms waistline
Iliac Crest
Rough, ear-shaped area on the ilium that articulates with the sacrum to form the sacroiliac joint.
Auricular Surface
A deep indentation that allows passage of the sciatic nerve from the pelvis to the lower limb
Greater Sciatic Notch
A bony prominence at the front of the ilium; attachment site for muscles and ligaments (e.g., inguinal ligament).
Anterior Superior Iliac Spine (ASIS)
Located below ASIS; serves as an attachment point for the rectus femoris muscle (important for hip flexion)
Anterior Inferior Iliac Spine (AIIS)
A bony landmark at the back of the ilium; visible as dimples on the lower back.
Posterior Superior Iliac Spine (PSIS)
Located below the PSIS; serves as an attachment site for ligaments
Posterior Inferior Iliac Spine (PIIS)
A large, shallow depression on the inner surface of the ilium; provides attachment for the iliacus muscle (important for hip flexion).
Iliac Fossa
The articulation between the auricular surface of the ilium and the sacrum; helps transfer weight from the spine to the lower limbs.
