Micro of Bone Flashcards
What are the four main types of bone cells?
Osteogenic cells, osteoblasts, osteocytes, osteoclasts.
What is the function of osteoblasts?
Build new bone by producing the extracellular matrix
Which bone cells are responsible for breaking down bone tissue?
Osteoclasts – They break down bone for remodeling and calcium release.
What are the two types of osseous tissue?
Compact bone and spongy bone.
What percentage of the skeleton is made of compact bone?
80%.
What is the function of spongy bone?
It is lightweight and porous, helping reduce bone weight and supporting bone marrow.
What type of connective tissue is the skeletal system linked with?
Cartilage
What is ossification?
The process of converting cartilage into bone during development.
Why does cartilage remain in adult bones?
To cushion joints and reduce friction.
What type of bone tissue is found in the outer layer of bones?
Compact bone.
Another name for Compact bone
Cortical Bone
Another name for Spongy Bone
cancellous bone
