Types of cells Flashcards
What are the two main types of cells in the body?
Germ cells and somatic cells.
What are germ cells responsible for?
Passing genes to the next generation.
Where are sperm cells produced, and how many per day?
Produced in the testes, approximately 300 million per day.
How often is an oocyte released during ovulation?
Once per month.
What is the function of epithelial cells?
Protection, secretion, and absorption.
What do red blood cells (erythrocytes) do?
Bind oxygen in the lungs and transport it to tissues.
What is the function of white blood cells (leukocytes)?
Defend the body against pathogens.
Name the five types of white blood cells (leukocytes).
Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, lymphocytes.
What do osteoblasts do?
Form new bone and produce collagen fibers.
What is the primary function of fibroblasts?
Secrete fibers and provide structural framework for tissues.
What are the three types of muscle cells?
- Skeletal muscle cells (voluntary, attach to skeleton).
- Smooth muscle cells (involuntary, found in organs and blood vessels).
- Cardiac muscle cells (involuntary, found in the heart).
What are the main parts of a neuron?
Dendrites, axon, cell body (soma).
What function do red blood cells serve in the body?
Transport oxygen.
What is the role of neurons in the nervous system?
Conduct electrical and chemical signals.
What type of muscle cells are found in blood vessels?
Smooth muscle cells.
