What is mechanical guidance?
Uses an object or apparatus to shape skill
Positives of mechanical guidance
Gives an early feel for the skill
Reduces dear and anxiety
Can be used with disabled athletes
Negatives of mechanical guidance
Overuse may inhibit kinaesthesis
Performer may become dependant
Motivation may be lost if the performer feels they are not completing the skill alone
Limited use to autonomous performers
Difficult to administer with large groups
Doesn’t allow for mistakes to be made and corrected
When should mechanical guidance be best used?
In the early stages of learning and removed as soon as possible

Proximity of the coach may be upsetting so they must ask for permission
