Application of Classification Flashcards
What is part practice?
Used when a skill can be broken down into subroutines to reduce complexity
Each subroutine is practiced in isolation and perfected
Then the whole skill is put back together
Give an example of part Practice
Gymnastics routine
What is whole practice?
Used when skills are not easily broken down into subroutines and have few decisions to be made
Skill is practiced as a whole which is ideally how a skill should be taught
Give an example of a whole practice
Realistic and true understanding
Forward role
What is progressive part practice?
Used when skills are complex and possibly serial
Each sub routine is practiced in isolation
Subroutine is then linked to the previous subroutine to form larger parts of the skill eventually becoming the whole skill
Give an example of progressive part practice
Basketball lay up
Triple jump
What is whole-part-whole practice?
Used to develop a kinaethesis and identify weak elements of a skill
Performer attempts the whole skill first and then the weak elements of the skill are practiced in isolation before being put back into the whole skill
Give an example of whole-part-whole practice
Golf swing
For advanced performers
Advantages of part practice
Low organisation skills Reduces the perceptual load Complex skills Dangerous skills Closed skills Motivation for getting sub routines correct
Negatives of part practice
Disrupt the kinaethesis of the skill
Can take longer than other methods
Transferring the sub-routine back into the whole skill can be difficult
Can be boring for autonomous performer
Who is part practice useful for?
Beginners
Advantages of using whole practice
High organisation skills Good for simple skills Low complexity Develops a kinaethesis for the skill Ballistic skills Develops understanding of the movement of the skill Quicker than part practice
Negatives of whole practice
Not suitable for dangerous skills
Not suitable for complex skills
Who is whole practice suitable?
Use where possible but not for dangerous skills
What questions to be need to ask about the skill being learned/ practiced?
Can it be broken down? Organisation
How much information has to be taken into account
Whether it’s open or closed
