Memory and its role Flashcards
What does the memory do within information procession?
Important in the interpretation of information and determining the motor programme we are going to use
Links perception with decision making
Compassion and recognition stages of the DCR process occurs in the memory
Previous experiences influence the interpretation of information and the decisions we make
What are the characteristics of a short term sensory store?
Streams of information are stored for 1 second only
Stores have a large capacity to store information
What is the short term sensory store?
All the information from the sense organs and proprioception is received here
The information that is attended to is passed onto the short term memory. (Selective attention)
Information that is not given attention (noise) is discarded and lost
Short term memory characteristics
Holds the information for 30 seconds
Can hold only 7 items at a time- limited capability
What is the short term memory?
Working memory
Collects and organises information that had been detected and passed on through selective attention from the STSS
ST memory sends to the LTM for information from previous experiences to compare with received information
Recognition then takes place in the STM and a decision is made
Decision is encoded and sent to the effectors
STM is where formation from STSS and LTM are brought together for processing
Characteristics of the long term memory
Has limitless capacity for the amount of information it can hold
Limitless retention
What happens at the long term memory?
Holds well learned, retained and per innately coded information collected from past experience
STM and LTM operate a 2 way process
Information is recalled from LTM to STM to be compared to information held there for 30 seconds for recognition to take place so that the correct motor programme can be selected
Strategies to improve retention and retrieval
Practice or repetition Linking to past experience Make information relevant, simple and meaningful Make information unusual and unique Intensify the stimulus Reward to reinforce success
