types and functions of teeth Flashcards
Anterior teeth/ posterior teeth
Anterior teeth: are incisors and canines
- visibe when smile
posterior teeth: are premoloars and molar. they appear to be straight line.
primary dentition teeth:
-molars
-incisors
-canines
permanent dentition teeth:
-molars
-incisors
-canines
-premolars
Embrasures
when two teeth in the same arch
- facially,lingually,occkusaaly or apically.
characteristics of tooth is
surfaces
-occlusal surfaces: posterior teeth
-Incisal surfaces: Anterior teeth
-lingual surfaces: surfaces of mandibular and maxillary closest o tongue.
-masticatory surfaces: chewing area.
- buccal or facial surfaces: closest to face.
-mesial surfaces: surfaces of teeth toward the midline.
- Distal surfaces: surfaces of teeth distant from midline.
function of teeth
- incisors: single-rooted teeth with sharp, thin. front of mouth.cut food without heavy force.
-canine teeth: known as cuspids located at corner of arch. they have the longest roots of all teeth, last teeth to be lose
- premolars: known as bicuspids, cross between canine and molars. the premolars have a borad surface made for chewing food.
- molars: much larger then premolars and usually have four or more cusps to chew grind food.
cusps, ridges, grooves
- cusps: any point or peak on occlusal surface of tooth
- ridges: any elevation on surface of tooth.
- developmental grooves: shallow groove or line on surface of tooth.
Angles
line angle: angle formed of two surfaces of tooth crown along an imaginary line.
point angle: angle formed by junction of three surfaces at one point.
Root
root divided crosswise into 3
- apical third: tip of root
- middle third:
- cervical third: neck of tooth
crown
divided into 3
- occlusocervial division
- mesiodistal division
-buccolingual dividion
occlusion
relationship of maxillary and mandubular when jaws are fully closed postion
types:
- centric occlusion: class I to III
- functional occlusion: chewing movment
-malocclusion: abonormal realationship of teeth
tooth numbering
- universal/national numbering system
- federation dentaire internationale FDI
- palmer notation system
tooth surface
-masial: tooth surface lcated closest to midline
-distal: tooth surface father from mifline
- lingual: tooth surface close to tongus
-Buccal: tooth surface close to the cheek
-facial: tooth surface near face
-Labial: tooth surface near lips
- occlusal: chewing surface if teeth
-incisal: sharp edge of anterior teeth
six classes of carious lesions
class I
class II
class III
