treatment for type 2 diabetes Flashcards
what are the aims for management for type 2 diabetes?
- treat symptoms
- prevent microvascular complications
- prevent cardiovascular complications
- screen for complications early while treatable
what is the major contributor for patients getting type 2 diabetes?
obesity
can type 2 diabetes be reversed?
if caught early and patient adopts healthier lifestyle/loses weight then their diabetes can go into remission
what HbA1c are you aiming for?
targets should be set with individuals in order to balance benefits with harm.
Usually <7% (53mmol/mol)
- an HbA1c of 7.0% (53mmol/mol) among people with type 2 diabetes is reasonable to reduce the risk of microvascular and macrovascular disease
- a target of 6.5% (48mmol/mol) may be appropriate at diagnosis
for a patient on triple therapy or insulin what should their HbA1c target be?
more relaxed
58mmol/mol may be appropriate
what are insulin secretagogues?
drugs that work on the pancreatic beta cell to make the beta cell produce more insulin
what are insulin sensitizers?
-drugs that make the insulin work better
what are examples of insulin secretagogues?
- sulphonyluraes
- DPP4 inhibitors
- GLP-1RA
what are some examples of insulin sensitizers?
- metformin
- thiazolidinediones
