what is hypoparathyroidism?
A
- when there is a decreased production parathyroid hormones (PTH)
- it is very rare

what are some of the causes of hypoparathyroidism?
A
- low levels of magnesium
- autoimmune
- DiGeorge syndrome
- haemochromatosis/ Wilsons
- thyroid surgery or radio ablation

how does hypoparathyroidism present?
A
- numbness or tingling
- muscle cramps
- anxiety or depression
- muscle spasms or twitches

what are the investigations for hypoparathyroidism?
A
bloods! calcium=low PTH=low phosphate= high magnesium= often low

what is the management for hypoparathyroidism?
A
- treat underlying condition
- calcium and vitamin D supplements

what is Pseudohypoparathyroidism?
A
-a genetic condition where the body is unable to respond to parathyroid hormone (PTH)

how does Pseudohypoparathyroidism present?
A
- short stature
- low IQ
- obesity
- headaches, blurred vision or hypersensitivity to light
- brachydactylyly of 4th metacarpal

A
BLOODS!!
PTH= high
Calcium=low
Phosphate=high
