Process of CBT?
Identify faulty cognitions
Help and test a patient to show them that they are not true
Set goals to think in a more positive way
Allow patients to look back on past experiences but focus on present

Advantages of CBT?
Empowers patients- self help strategy
Research of DeRubeis?
CBT and drug therapy were compared in a placebo test. Both were more effective than the placebo, CBT were generally as effective as drugs but only in the cases when the therapist had experience
Hollon research?
Conducted a follow up study of DeRubeis patients and found that out of all the patients who had withdrawn from treatments CBT patients were less likely to relapse than drug patients
Who is CBT particularly effective for?
People who put a lot of pressure on themselves
Disadvantages of CBT?
Takes a long time and are costly
Treatment only works if therapist is trained
Issue of patients feeling they are to blame
Cause or consequence- faulty cognition
What is CBT more effective with?
Drug therapy
What is REBT?
A therapy devised by Ellis, which aims to change irrational behaviour
Subdivisions of REBT?
Empirical- looks to find evidence for irrational thoughts
Logical- investigates whether negative thoughts follow on from facts
What does REBT develop on from?
ABC becomes ABCDE
D- Dispute
E- effects of challenging rational beliefs
Differences in what Ellis and Beck believe about a therapist?
Ellis believes that the therapist should almost act like a teacher - he does not believe that a warm personal relationship is needed unlike Beck
