Relability and Validity Flashcards
What is reliability?
How consistent or dependable a test is
What is internal reliability?
It describes the extent to which a measure is consistent within itself
How can internal reliability be tested?
Split half method- the test is randomly divided into 2 and if internal reliability is demonstrated the results should be similar and show a high positive correlation
What is external validity?
It describes the extent to which a measure varies from one use to another
How can external validity be measured?
Use the test-retest method- the same person is tested twice over a period of time and similar scores demonstrate high external validity
What is a problem with the test-retest method?
The participant may have learnt more by the time they do the task for the second time
How can you fix the problems associated with the test retest method?
External validity can be checked using the equivalent forms test where participants scores on 2 different but equally hard tasks are measured
What is face validity?
whether it looks subjectively promising that a tool measures what it’s supposed to
High exam scores are a good indication that someone would score highly on IQ test- cannot be sure but good indication
Internal validity?
Are the changes down to the IV that is manipulated
Construct validity?
Does it measure what it is supposed to
Temporal validity?
Are the results still valid over time
