Role of culture within sex roles?
Vary by culture- suggests they are culturally transmitted
Globalisation and breakdown of cultural beliefs do however result in a movement towards a uniform sex role
Influence of media in sex type stereotypes?
Been harshly criticised for stereotyping sex roles, in particularly presenting women in a negative way
Some say recently portrayals have improved
Some say still harmful
What is the impact of categorising behaviour into male and female?
It can limit a person’s role in society- prevents positive contribution - in UK only 3% of nursery teachers were male, only one woman has ever won the Nobel Peace prize for Science
Evaluating BSRI?
Has good test-retest reliability- produces consistent results when used on different occasions with the same participants
Does lack external validity as it was created on the data produced by 1970 American Students-may not apply to other cultures
What is their too much focus on when looking at androgyny??
The positive qualities of androgyny as overpowering male characteristics can lead to someone being too aggressive and overpowering female characteristics can lead to someone being too timid in situations
What does androgyny fail to explain?
Why some people are androgynous and others are not
Gender bias?
Still the ides that masculine qualities are superior even within androgynous individuals
Why is the BSRI reductionist?
Reduces masculinity and femininity down to a single score
How is the BSRI outdated?
New measures now look at a person’s interests and abilities rather than just personality type
