SLT evaluation Flashcards
What can SLT not explain?
Gender changes with age- assumes there are no developmental stages
Cannot explain gender differences within same sex siblings- 2 brothers may act completely differently therefore suggests a biological mechanism
Why is the SLT outdated?
Does not explain how new gender behaviours arise for example the stay at home dad- can only explain things in terms of observation and imitation
What 2 factors can the explanation not distinguish between?
Whether a person chooses to imitate someone because the behaviour is gender appropriate or whether it is because the model is the same sex
Lack of gender bias?
The SLT focuses on both boys and girls and the effects of peer influence
Nature or nurture?
Nurture dependent on experience- observations/imitations- lacks focus on biological factors
Media- correlation issue?
Just because heavy TV watchers hold stronger gender stereotypes does not mean that TV is the cause of such attitdues
Media- why is it simplistic?
To see children as passive recipients to tv messages- children actively select what to watch- more cognition involved that thought
Johnston and Ettema?
Found that TV programmes aimed at 12 year olds designed to counter gender stereotypes did reduce stereotypes
Main problem with cultural studies?
Problem of imposed etic- where researchers use methods suited to their own culture rather than cultures they are investigating
Influence of globalisation for cultures?
Gobalisation means that there has been a reduction in the categorising differences of male and female behaviour- social influences are arguably stronger
Why did Mead’s conclusions change?
She married a man who had more traditional ideas about gender- influence of personal viewpoints
Interactionist view?
Arguably most convincing- gender roles are at first determined by biological factors but can be heavily influenced by social factors
La Frombroise?
Interviewed those from a North American tribe- gender roles were very different to that of a western culture- women were warriors for example- aggression- social construct
Barry??
Looks at how nurturing is seem predominantly by most cultures are a feminine characteristic, while self-reliance is viewed as a male characteristic- biological basis for gender
