Evaluation Holism Flashcards
Main problem with holism?
Overcomplicates behaviour that could have simple explanations
What does holism make it hard to determine?
Cause and effect relationships
What does holism often neglect?
Biological influences
Why is holism criticised?
Almost impossible to study all parts of behaviour
Why is experimental reductionism a strength?
Useful in scientific studies where isolation of variables is needed e.g. identifying the different genes involved in Sz
Practical application of reductionism?
Bio reductionism in particular= beneficial, allows for treatments to be developed to treat mental illness
Why is reductionist approach over simplistic?
Behaviour is complex therefore it suggests a whole explanation is not given
What does a reductionist approach not address?
Large societal issues
Levels of Explanations?
Different ways of explaining concepts
Low level= bio- nerves, genes
Middle- psychological
High = society and culture
Example of Levels of explanation?
Memory
Low= Maguire
Middle= Miller
High= Bartlett
