Key words Flashcards
Coding
The format in which info is stored
`Capacity
The amount of info a memory store can hold
Duration
The amount of time info can be stored
Short term memory
A limited capacity store
Long term memory
A permanent memory store, has a unlimited capacity (100+ years) coding is semantic
Multi store model
A representation of how memory flows through 3 stores, the sensory register, short term memory and long term memory
Sensory register
The memory store for the senses such as visual (iconic) and hearing (echoic). It has a huge capacity but a duration of half a second
Interference
Forgetting because one memory has blocked another causing one or both memories to distort or be forgotten
Pro-active interference
When old memories disrupt the recall of newer memories
Retro-active interference
When new memories disrupt the recall of older memories
Retrieval failure
A form of forgetting. It occurs when we don’t have the necessary cues.
Cue
A trigger of information, which can be meaningful or indirectly linked, external or internal
