Adult pts who have sustained a minor, superficial burn from a thermal source.
Per the burns treat and refer guideline, if any doubt exists to the nature, size or depth of the burn then?

What is the key characteristic of burns being treated under the Treat and Refer guideline?
Unbroken skin.
How long should superficial burns be cooled for?
20 mins with running water.
After initial cooling, the burn can be gently cleaned with…?
Gauze and normal saline.
Should soothing gels be applied to broken, burnt skin?
No.
Are dressings required for superficial burns?
No.
Do TnR burns pts require GP referral?
Yes, within 24hrs.

What pain relief options can be administered to TnR burns patients?
Paracetamol.
What are the 8 contraindications for the Burns TnR guideline?
- Burn involves sensitive area - face, hands, feet, major joints, genitalia, circumferential burns of limb/chest
- Partial or full thickness burn
- Smoke inhalation or potential inhalation injury
- Chemical, electrical or radiation burn
- Suspected non-accidental burn
- Associated traumatic injuries
- Pain unable to be controlled with oral analgesia
- Comorbidities that may impair wound healing, eg. diabetes, immunocompromised, chronic steroid use, Hx poor wound healing
What are the 2 indications for the Burns TnR guideline?
Small, isolated, superficial burn with unbroken skin.
OR
Sunburn
If Burns TnR indicated and no contraindications exist, what further criteria must be assessed?
Has pain been controlled after 20mins of cooling and is burn superficial and minor?
If treat and referring a minor burn, what are the actions?
- Clean wound if required
- Consider applying non-perfumed moisturiser
- Consider paracetamol
- Refer to PCP within 24hrs
- Provide info sheet
