Paediatric Hypoglycaemia

If a paediatric pt has a BGL <4 and responds to commands, what is the Mx?

Answer 1

Glucose paste, 15g. Repeat up to 15g once after 15mins if inadequate response - titrate to pt response.

Question 2

If a paediatric pt has received Glucose paste but has responded poorly, what is the Mx?

Answer 2

Consider Glucagon IM
<25kg = 0.5 IU (0.5mL)
≥25kg, = 1 IU (1mL)

Question 3

If the paediatric pt has a BGL <4 and does not respond to commands, what is the Mx?

Answer 3

Consider Glucagon IM
<25kg = 0.5 IU (0.5mL)
≥25kg, = 1 IU (1mL)

Request MICA - if a pt requires Glucagon IM, they will likely require IV Dextrose
