Traumatic brain injury Flashcards
Coutacoop
damage to the front and the back
Traumatic Brian injury
caused by trauma
secondary complications due to swelling
severe and complex
cognitive element: behavioural problems
Hypoxic brain injury
oxygen is needed for the brain to make use of glucose
damage to the rain after 4 minutes without oxygen
cerebral anoxia
complete interruption of oxygen supply to the brain
cerebral hypoxia
partial supply of oxygen but at a level which is adequate to normal brain function
Penetrating injury
results in an open would
risk of infection
provides an exit for swelling
hammer
Compression injury
skull is squeezed
car crash or fall
deceleration
countercoup. Personality, behaviour and sexual appropriateness is altered due to damage to the frontal lobe
diffuse axonal injury
stretching of the axons so much so they are torn sometimes
brain moves back and forth and to the side of the skull
can be due to repetitive concussion or RTA
slow processing as a result
acquired brain injury
stroke, tumour, brain haemorrhage, meningitis
cerebellum infarct
tend to get low tone
don’t influence over muscle tone
left hemisphere
language, reading, writing and speech
sequencing of action
problems with language
apraxia
right hemisphere
non dominant processing of global information recognition of objects analysis of emotional stimuli spatial relationships
Posterior portion
receives input from ascending spinal pathways and senses
involved with processing sensory input
lesions may resulting deficits in visuospatial perception
Anterior horn
lesions may result in motor, planning or behavioural problems
receives input from posterior cortex and lower brain centres
involved with output and processing for speech, movement and behaviour
