NSAIDS
antiinflammatories
reduce pain, decrease fever, prevent blood clots and, in higher doses, decrease inflammation.
Types: ibruprofen, naproxen
can cause headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, indigestion
Codeine
painkiller post surgery or an injury
it is used for longstanding pain when paracetamol hasn’t worked. It works by stopping pain signals being delivered to the brain
side effects: nausea, constipation, dry mouth, confusion, vertigo, feeling sleepy, dizziness
Diazepam
used to treat anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, muscle spasms and seizures
it increases the activity of GABA that sends signals through your body. If you don’t have enough of this it will cause the problems above.
side effects: dizziness, drowsiness, hypotension, headache, muscle weakness,
Cocodomol
painkiller: a mixture of paracetamol and codeine
it treats migraines, headaches, toothache
side effects: constipation, feeling sick, dizziness, feeling sleepy or headaches
Salbutomol inhaler
used to relieve symptoms of asthma and COPD such as coughing, wheezing and feeling breathless. It relaxes the muscles of the airways which makes it easier to breathe
can be given in tablets or a blue inhaler
side effects: feeling shaky, muscle cramps, headaches, faster heartbeat for a shorter time
Prednisolone
a corticosteroid
used to treat allergies, blood disorders, skin diseases, infections, certain cancers and to prevent organ rejection after a transplant.
it reduces inflammation and helps to damp down your immune system which prevents an autoimmune response like RA
less than 20mg is a low dose
side effects: weight gain, restlessness, sweating a lot, not able to sleep, indigestion
Amoxicillin
an antibiotic used to treat chest infections, pneumonia, UTIs
side effects: sickness, diarrhoea,
Glyceryl trinitrate (GTN)
a mouth spray for angina. it will help to prevent a heart attack when a patient experiences dizziness, flushing or a headache
side effects: headache, blurred vision, flushing, excessive sweating, clammy skin, dizziness and fainting
Warfarin
anticoagulant which stops the blood from clotting- a blood thinner
used for a stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism
side effects: pass blood in your urine or faeces, have severe bruising, have long nosebleeds – lasting more than 10 minutes, have bleeding gums, cough up blood or have blood in your vomit, headaches, heavy or increased bleeding during your period
Nebulised salbutamol
nebulisers are used to give high doses of a medicine
used for asthma and other conditions with reversible airway obstruction
Arrhythmias; dizziness; headache; hypokalaemia (with high doses); nausea; palpitations; tremor, muscle complaints or cramps.
Beclomethasone
used to prevent and control symptoms such as SOB and wheezing it is a corticosteroid reducing the swelling of airways in the lungs side effects: headache nasal irritation, stuffiness, or dryness sneezing nosebleed joint or muscle pain nausea lightheadedness unpleasant taste or smell muscle weakness bruise easily menstrual period changes acne white patches in your throat, mouth, or nose
Getamicin
used for bacterial eye infections
side effects: nausea, vomiting, stomach upset
