Respiratory failure Flashcards
1
Q
What is type 1 respiratory failure?
A
Decreased Pa02 <8pa
or low C02
disorder of diffusion
2
Q
Causes of type 1 respiratory failure
A
decreased SA
increased thickness barrier
decreased diffusion gradient
3
Q
What is type 2 respiratory failure?
A
decreased Pa02 <8kpa
or increased C02
this is due to a disorder of ventilation and hypoventilation
it is a balance between strength and load
4
Q
What are things which affect strength?
A
impaired neuromuscular transmission
diminished drive- too much anathestic
muscle weakness: emphysema, exhaustion or neuromuscular problem
MND
GBS
poor muscle nutrition
over use of accessory respiratory muscles
5
Q
what are things which affect load?
A
chest wall abnormalities airway and lung abnormalities what is making it hard to breath wheeze, consolidation, collapse, pulmonary oedema cystic fibrosis thoracotomy, decreased chest compliance rib fracture collapse, sputum. brochospasm
