transport jn plants Flashcards
what is the point of the transport system in plants?
- enables leaves to receive water for photosynthesis
-enables leaves to receive mineral ions needed to convert the products of photosynthesis into useful substances
what does xylem transport?
water and mineral ions from roots to leaves
what does phloem transport?
-sucrose and amino acids from
the leaves to the growing points (tips of the shoot and flowers)
3 facts about the xylem
- made up of thick walled dead cells- completely hollow
-cell wall contains waterproof lignin - nitrate ions needed to make amino acids and proteins
-magnesium ions needed to make chlorophyll
3 facts about the phloem
-consists of living cells
-sugar made in photosynthesis converted into sucrose
-moving sucrose and amino acids around the plant requires energy. this is called translocation
where do plants take in water from the soil?
-through root hairs- main site of absorption by the roots
features of root hairs
-thin walled (short distance)
-hair like extensions greatly increase surface area of root epidermis
function of root hairs
-to absorb water and minerals form the soil
how do mineral ions get into root hair cells
-active transport
water moves ____ a concentration gradient from where there are ____ water molecules to where it here are ____ water molecules. This gradient is maintained as water is continually being taken up by the _____ in the middle of the root. The water is carried in the _____ _______ to all parts of the plant
-Down
-more
-fewer
-xylem
-xylem vessels
