-characteristics such as high % of muscle (for meat eg Belgian blue bull) or to produce more milk or eggs, or simply just to look better (pets)
- done by looking among offspring for those with best combo of desired features (phenotypes)
-then using only these individual for breeding next generation, passing on desired alleles
- repeat this for generations to come
