kingdoms Flashcards
plants characteristics
-multicellular
-contain chloroplasts- photosynthesis
-cellulose cell walls
-store carbohydrates (starch or sucrose)
animals characteristics
-multicellular
-no chloroplasts (no photosynthesis)
-nervous co-ordination
-able to move from A to B
-store carbohydrates as glycogen
fungi characteristics
-no photosynthesis
-made from thread like structures called hyphae, which contain many nuclei
-multicellular mostly, with some unicellular
-chitin cell walls
-feed by saprotrophic nutrition
-may store carbohydrates as gylcogen
protoctists characteristic
-microscopic single cell organisms
-some have more features like an animal cell, such an Amoeba - causes Ambeasis
-some have more feature like a plant cell, having chloroplasts, such as Chorella
- a pathogenic example is plasmodium causing malaria
viruses characteristics
-not living organisms
-small particles (smaller than bacteria)
-parasitic- can only reproduce in living cells
-infect every type of living organism
-no cellular structure but contain a protein coat and either RNA or DNA
-Examples include ‘tobacco mosaic virus’ which effects tobacco plants leaving them discoloured as it prevents formation of chloroplasts
- influenza virus causes flu
- HIV virus that causes AIDS
bacteria
microscopic, single celled organisms
- have a cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm and plasmids
- lack a nucleus but contain a circular chromosome of DNA
- some can photosynthesise but most feed off other organisms
- pathogenic example is Pneumococcus that causes pneumonia
