crop production Flashcards
1
Q
what conditions are needed to maximise growth of crops
A
-light source
-water source
-high temp
-high co2 conc
2
Q
how might we control these factors?
A
- polytunnels- allows optimal rates of photosynthesis
3
Q
what are the different products typically found in fertiliser, and what do they do?
A
- Nitrates- produce protein/ amino acids (and nucleic acids)
- phosphates - produce nucleic acids
- magnesium- produces chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis
4
Q
advantages of organic fertilisers
A
- improves soil structure
- releases minerals over longer period of time
- greater range of minerals
-less cost to farmer- already available on farm
5
Q
disadvantages of organic fertilisers
A
- slow acting
- more difficult to apply
- may contain pests
6
Q
advantages of inorganic fertilisers
A
- mineral ions release immediately- fast acting
- contents known
- easier to apply
7
Q
disadvantages of inorganic fertilisers
A
- can lead to eutrophication
- requires regular reapplication - expensive
8
Q
advantages of pesticides
A
- reduces pests instantly
- can kill the whole population
9
Q
disadvantages of pesticides
A
- cost -needs to be reapplied regularly
- not specific- kills all insects
- pests can become resistant
- chemical can concentrate in all animals up the food chain
10
Q
advantages of biological control
A
- pest specific
- only initial cost needed- organism reproduces
-pest not become resistant - no effect on animals up food chain
11
Q
disadvantages of biological control
A
-takes time to reduce pest populations
-not all population killed
- expensive to re-populate (if required)
