respiration Flashcards
what is cell respiration?
the boxes of breaking down food molecules to release atp. a series of chemical reactions
what is atp
cell’s source of energy to carry out essential life processes. examples include:
-cell division, contraction of muscles, building large molecules- such as proteins, transporting molecules and maintaining body temp
what is aerobic respiration?
respiration that requires oxygen to break down glucose to release energy.
some energy released as heat but most is trapped in a useable form of atp
aerobic respiration equations
-glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
-C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
what is anaerobic respiration?
-respiration without using oxygen
effectiveness of different types of respiration:
- aerobic- more effective as it completely oxidises the glucose- lots of atp released
- anaerobic- less effective as glucose not completely broken down- less atp released
problems with anaerobic respiration
-produces waste products such as lactic acid, which can kill cells if built up, so must be excreted
advantages of anaerobic respiration
- allows cells to obtain energy when oxygen supply is limited
anaerobic respiration equation (plants+fungi)
glucose -> carbon dioxide + ethanol
anaerobic respiration equation (animals)
glucose -> lactic acid
what is oxygen debt
the volume of oxygen needed to oxidise the lactic acid
