Transport Across Cell Membranes Flashcards
Describe the structure of the Cell Membrane
The Cell Membrane is made up from proteins and phospholipids
What is the membrane of a proteins with a channel running through it describes as?
Selectively permeable
What does selectively permeable mean?
It controls what enters and exits a cell by size, smaller molecules will be able to get in however larger ones won’t
What are some substances that can pass through the membrane?
Oxygen, glucose and amino acids
What are some substances that can’t pass through the membrane?
Starch, proteins and cells
What does ‘Concentration Gradient’ mean
The term concentration gradient means that the concentration of a particular substance os greater on one side than the other
What is Diffusion?
The movement of molecules of a substance moving down a concentration gradient. The concentration always moves from a higher region of concentration to a lower region
What type of transport is diffusion?
Passive (doesn’t require energy to be carried out)
What substances can diffuse into a cell?
Oxygen and glucose
What substances can diffuse out of a cell?
CO2 and waste
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a higher water concentration to a lower water concentration across a selectively permeable membrane
Is the salt concentration of a potato was 2% and the salt concentration of the water was 4% would the potato gain or loose mass?
It would loose mass
What type of transport is Osmosis?
Passive (doesn’t require energy to be carried out)
When will a cell become turgid?
When water moves into a cell and it’s full to capacity
When will a cell become plasmolysed?
A cell will become plasmolysed when water has moved out of the cell
