Stem Cells Flashcards
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are unspecialised cells that can divide to self-renew or become specialised. They are involved in growth and repair and have the ability to become any cell type in the body
What are stem cells responsible for?
Stem cells are responsible for the production of specialised cells in animals
What do stem cells have the ability to do?
Stem cells have the ability to become any type of cells
Name 2 types of stem cells in animals
-Embryonic Stem Cells
-Tissue Stem Cells
What is an Embryonic Stem Cell?
Embryonic Stem Cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilised in a laboratory
What is a Tissue Stem Cell?
Tissue Stem Cells are found in many tissues such as the bone marrow, skeletal muscle, blood vessels, skin, liver, teeth and heart. They are often thought of as built in repair kits, regenerating surrounding damaged cells
What are potential uses of stem cells?
-Type 1 diabetes
-Parkinson’s disease
-Alhzlmers disease
What is the difference between an embryonic stem cell and a tissue stem cell
Where are stem cells found?
-Embryonic stem cells are taken from an embryo at a ver early stage
-Tissue stem cells are found in the body throughout life
