Nervous Controls Flashcards
Describe the components of the nervous system including the CNS
The nervous system is made up of the central nervous system (CNS) and other nerves. It is responsible for sending, receiving and interpreting information from all parts of the body.
The CNS consists of the spinal cord and the brain and is connected to the rest of the body by other neurons
What is the function of the cerebrum?
Controls conscious thoughts and actions, memory and personality
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Controls muscle coordination and balance
What is the function of the medulla?
Controls breathing and heart rate
What is the function of the CNS?
The CNS receives messages from all over the body then sorts out the information and sends electrical impulses to muscle glands which make an appropriate response
What are reflexes?
Reflexes are rapid responses to environmental changes that protect the body from harm
What is the function of a sensory neurone?
Pass information from the senses to the CNS
What is the function of the inter neurone?
Located in the CNS and processes information from the senses that require a response
What is the function of the motor neurone?
Enables a response to occurs at an effector (a muscle or gland)
What are the 3 types of neurones
Sensory, inter and motor nuerones
What is an electrical impulse?
Electrical impulses move along specific nuerones to pass messages to the CNS from all over the body
What is a synapse?
A synapse is the place where two neurones meet
What is the function of a synapse?
When a nerves electrical impulse arrives at the end of one neuron it causes the release of chemicals. The chemicals diffuse across the synapse and bind with the receptors on the next neuron triggering another impulse.
Chemicals transfer messages between neurons at synapses
