transpiration Flashcards
1.
starts with evaporation of water of cells still inside leaf
what is transpiration
evaporation of water from a plant
2.
water diffuses in through air spaces in spongy mesophyll and out of the leaf through stomata
3.
now water passes through from the xylem to the leaf to replace water that has been lost
4.
finally water drawn into root hair cells and up the xylem vessels into the leaf
what is the whole process called
transpiration stream
why is transpiration important
2 reasons
brings water which is required for photosynthesis
transports dissolved mineral ions like magnesium too
how does evaporation of water help a leaf
helps leaf cool down especially in hot weather
rate: temp
higher at higher temp as evaporation is higher at higher temp
rate: humidity
higher in dry conditions when air is not humid since evap is higher in dry conditions
rate: wind
higher in windy conditions because wind removes water vapour
rate: light intensity
higher at increased light intensity - higher rate of photosynthesis
