What type of organ is the heart?
Muscular
What does the right pump in the heart do?
Forces oxygenated blood to the lungs where it picks up oxygen and loses carbon dioxide
Once the blood returns to the heart, what happens?
Oxygenated blood is then pumped to the rest of the body by the left pump
How many chambers does the heart have?
4
What is the upper chambers called?
Atria
Where does the right atrium receive blood from?
The vena cava
Where does the left atrium receive blood from?
Pulmonary vein
What does the atria do?
Contracts together to move blood into the lower chambers
What are the lower chambers called?
Ventricles
What happens when the ventricles contract?
Force blood out of the heart
What does the right ventricle do?
Pushes blood into the pulmonary artery
What does the left ventricle do?
Pushes blood into the aorta
What does the left ventricle have?
Thicker walls
What do the valves do in the heart do?
Prevent the blood from flowing in the wrong direction
How is the heart muscle supplied with oxygenated blood?
By the coronary arteries
